Yes and they were so frightened . I hated that.

A bedraggled Starling once. It was none the worse for its experience. The fire wasn't lit. It may even have helped to clean the chimney.

I've never had a coal fire but I ended up with a blue tit emerging from under my gas fire when I lived in a top floor flat in Leeds, freaked me out bigtime

nope, just had a bunch of bats nest in the chimney one summer. first time we fired up the furnace the nest and some of the bats erupted in flames, they make a hell of a noise, sound like babies screaming. never did forget how funny flaming bats looked flying out the chimney. mostly burned wood, just put a few ladles of coal on at night. why waste money on coal when we lived in a bush?
