When you go apply for financial aid what should you bring?

Last time I went to apply for financial aid and they asked for my w-4.I didn't even have that, so i had no idea what they were talking about. But how should I go about applying for it. Do I need to bring any information with me like I.D., SSN, Birth Certificate, Etc.
And when I apply do I need to apply 1st on fafsa.ed.gov?
Please tell me all you know, thanks
