When winding a voice coil,is it better to use a larger or smaller awg(gage) wire?

I've heard it is better to to use a smaller awg(gage)but I'm not sure,that was only from one source.I'm trying to get more opinions.If it makes a difference,I plan to use square wire.thanks for the time!
