When will an asteroid, comet, etc...hit Earth?

I am not talking about that small debris that hits earth everyday. I am talking about a life changing or even life ending event.

What is the least amount of time the governments would know? Could it happen without them even knowing? Could it happen as soon as within 2 weeks of them finding out? A month? A year?

If the government knew today that a global killing event were to happen, how much notice, if any, would they give their citizens?
 
A large meteor/asteroid could hit Earth with no notice whatsoever. There are numerous documented instances of large objects hitting or almost hitting the earth (skipping off the atmosphere) without any warning; we just happened to be lucky that they skipped off the atmosphere instead of coming down a little steeper and contacting the Earth.

If the government knew something like that would happen, it's hard to say how much notice they'd give. My own suspicion is that they'd keep it quiet as long as they could to avoid unstoppable rioting and general collapse of civilization. However, trying to get 180+ governments and tens of thousands of astronomers around the globe all to keep quiet about such an event would be nearly impossible. I don't see any conceivable way it would be kept secret before it happened.
