When trying to save a game on PS2, it freezes on me, what can I do to stop it

from freezing? I play NHL2K3, I can load the game great, but after I play a game, the game freezes on me before I have a chance to save the game. I reload the game and I'm back to where I started. The memory card is not full so thats not the issue. Is this a matter of cleaning the game system or could it be the actual game itself?
