My instructor says that during an all day hike, 1000 calories per meal (breakfast lunch and dinner) is necessary, in addition to another 1000 calories in the form of trail foods (ie. trail mix). This makes 4000 for each day of the expedition.
This seems a little overkill to me, and it is difficult to make single preservable meals that have that many calories (I have been using the meals-in-a-bag method that you prepare at home before leaving).
Is there any correct amount of calories I should be consuming each day while on a rigorous hike? Since my safety may be at stake if I take your advise, please try to justify your answer.
Thanks!
