When the Taliban took over Kabul, they casually killed most of the zoo

animals for no apparent reason. Why? Only three animals survived, including a lion blinded by a hand grenade tossed by a Taliban soldier when his compatriot decided to challenge the lion (over "Who is the lion now?") and got into a brawl with it -- and a bear who lost his nose to a Taliban soldier who cut it off with an infantry knife because "He should have kept his beard longer, so I decided to cut off much of his face to teach him a lesson." Does the Taliban consider zoos and "arrogant animals" in conflict with the Quran? Or do zoos and wild animals in general violate some cultural taboo? Was the Taliban's torment of the zoo animals some sort of religious issue or simply a vile sadism?

Are Muslims typically horrified by such behavior? Or is there a cultural issue at stake which we in the west do not understand?
