When taking over a Honda lease in CA, do I owe the dealer anything?

You can't assume somone elses lease. That lease was approved based on someone else's credit, not yours. You have to apply for your own and tha will require a down payment and new terms.

The dealer is trying to get a down payment out of me as well as change the monthly payment - when the whole reason I want to assume a lease is to avoid the down payment and to take the low monthly payments.

Uh, yes you can assume someone else's lease. It's done all the time.

Tell the dealer to FUK off and get your lease from http://www.swapalease.com or http://www.leasetrader.com

You usually just have to pay the transfer fee.

You need to deal with the lease holder, not the dealer. If you just take over the lease without approval of the company who actually holds the lease, both you and the person who leased the car may get in trouble.

If the lease holder is using the dealer as their agent, then you have to do what the dealer says.

If you are trying to use this as a way to get around badcredit, it does not work as you still have to qualify for credit.
