when studying abroad, is it wise to check and bring a bike with you?

i'm studying abroad in Ireland, and i'm thinking about bringing my bike with me.
is it worth giving up one of my checked bags to bring a bike?
i don't want to have to pay for bus fares or taxis.
i just got a bike for free, and i'd really like to take it with me. if i don't bring it with me, i'm not buying one there.
