When relocating to a new area, what are some good tips for purchasing a home?

I want to get pre-approved but i am not sure to do so in the area where i currently reside or the new location. I am a first time home buyer and i don't want to be taken advantage of. I have found some really nice properties in the location i am moving to and i would like to jump on these deals while they are hot! I will not be moving until december of 09.
 
Contact a realtor in the new area, and let him/her guide you through the process. Get referrals for a good realtor, because there's lots of dishonest and unethical pretenders out there.
