When reading a fish finder from right to left, which side of the boat do you fish from?

I have a fishfinder and I understand the information is from the bottom of the boat but even when it shows fish I am not sure which side of the boat to fish from.
 
A fish finder sends out a signal in a circle shaped pattern. The deeper the water the larger the diameter of the circle Think of a funnel up side down. From your owners manual you should be able to find out how large a pattern is at a certain depth. If the circle is larger than the boat is wide then you can fish from both sides.

The location of the sending unit also makes a difference as to where the pattern is with respect to the boat.
