when practicing the muay thai kick should I swing my arm back or keep my hands up?

my mma instructor tells me when i throw the kick in the traditional way(swinging the arm back when the kick is thrown) i loose power. he says i should keep my hands up and put my whole body into it. when i spar i do both. since im tall and lanky i rarely ever get hit in the face when i swing my rear hand back. i weigh about 125 lb so i try to focus on more speed and technique than power.
