when playing backgammon, the game won't let me move certain pieces?

i move all my pieces home and begin bearing off but for instance i will have 6 checkers in row 1 but it wont let me bear them off only move checkers from lets says 5 and 6 a space or two over or wahtever is on the dice. why does it restrict those pieces from being able to be borne off, its literally messing up my game when it forces me to make single checkered rows
