When on an interview and asked "what salary do you desire", is it professional

if I ask what they are offering? I don't want to give a number to low or to high. If I give a low number they might agree because their saving money. If I ask for to high, they might not consider me for the job. Should I ask them what they are offering?
 
I usually say," I would be curious to know what you would consider that would be fair to the both of us."

Yes, this is "tip toe through the dynamite". Ask too much and bye-bye job,ask too low and you run the risk on losing out on a considerably more offer.
