When making a left turn at an intersection and there's a car blocking your way...?

Hi, I'm about to take my road test and I was reviewing somethings when I came across something.

Say you want to make a left turn at an intersection and there's a car (let's say a big van/truck) making a left in the opposite direction. That car is blocking your view of making a left turn safely (b/c you can't see oncoming traffic).

Do I have to wait for that car to turn left? Or can I turn left after seeing no cars coming up, but I'm not exactly sure if another will come through.

I've been practicing driving with my parents and when I'm in that situation, I just make a left when I see no cars coming up behind the big car trying to make a left on the opposite side. If I don't wait for the big car to turn left during my test, will I get an auto-fail?

Thanks in advance.
