When I send an HTML email there are forward slashes in the tags with prevent the text

formatting? I am trying to send an HTML email, I had the problem of it not formatting. I have found that there are slashes in my tags which prevent the text from formatting:

for example:

<span style=\"font-family:Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif\">

Why does it do this when I send an email. How do I fix it?
