When I run my chevy truck for awhile doesn'st shift right check the fluid and it's good?

1. drain the fluid
2. smell the fluid, does it smell or look burned
3. how many miles on the tranny.
4. check for linkage problems
 
I've got an '88 Chevy pick up...it might be the transmission bands or the filter is clogged, or maybe the vacuum tube is clogged.
