I enlisted in the Army Reserves, I haven't been to Basic or even my first drill. I made the mistake of telling my recruiters that I want to go USMC Reserves instead for various reasons, one of them being shorter deployment lengths (USMC is 6 months, Army is 12, and I'm going to college, self explanatory. Rather be back in college after 6 months than 12, especially since I don't want ECS). My recruiters were desperate in keeping me, I could tell. They first told me I won't need a DD368 to go USMCR for some reason, even though I eventually confirmed that i needed one.
After I told them about my college situation, they brushed it off saying that I "will not deploy during college". I was under the impression that ALL reservists can be deployed at any time? I will not do ECS, since I want my education benefits, and ECS doesn't even last for the whole time while I'm at college (I plan on going to graduate school).
So I decided to just go to my unit to sort this out. Will my unit do the same thing to me? I'm pretty sure that my recruiters are interested mainly in their quota, which is why they are telling me that I won't deploy. Will my unit be biased in any way, or will they consider my request?
If my unit denies my request, I'll just suck it up and go to Basic, and keep trying to get it approved.
