When i hit a golf ball, why does it always swing to the right?

I've recently started playing golf. I tend to favour my shorter irons and play pretty straight with them. Although my driving is a little embarrassing at times. I strike it well and the ball takes of well, but then it nearly always starts veering of to the right.
What am I doing wrong? I don't think I'm trying to over hit it and I try to let the club do the work, but there is an area in my technical work which requires me to pay more attention and I simply don't know where it is.
Please send your suggestions. I'm playing 18 holes today!
Many thanks in advance.

Here's your fix: Assuming you're right handed, keep your right elbow in contact with your right side until you make contact with the ball. It is impossible to slice if you do this. When you slice the ball to the right you are coming outside to inside at impact. Your swing thought should be coming from inside to outside through the ball. Enjoy!

It could be many things. Best bet is to have someone who knows what they're doing watch your stroke. It's easier for them to see what is happening than for yourself. Have you got a driving range nearby? That's the ideal place for it. Some of us have been trying to get our stroke right for years . . .
