When I delete my browsing history, does it really delete ?

For example on Internet explorer 8 when delete my browsing history does it actually delete it from computer permanently?

I ask as i use at work and I know my managers check on these things..
Not that I go on dodgy sites or anything.
Is there a way to wipe it off my computer?
