When fishing, can I use a smaller, lighter rod without risk of it snapping on a big

fish? I'm a fresh water fisherman, so big is relative to that, and monster catfish aside, I'm looking at probably 40 pounds max.

will a 6'3 rod with extra fast action be too flimsy to hull in bigger fish?
