When Eight Bells Toll (1971)

It's difficult to believe people used to pay money to see stuff like this.
Only the presence of Anthony Hopkins saves this wannabe Bond movie from being a total loss.
Dreary rainswept exteriors, amateurish action scenes, diabolical dubbing, some obvious tv-friendly cutting and awful music all contribute to making this hard work.
If you're nine or Hopkins' mum you'll love it but anyone else should steer clear.:o

Isn't it based on Alistair MacLean? The 60s and 70s were profilerated with adaptations of his thrillers, which all interchangeably amounted to soporifically convoluted plots unfolding admist dour settings, ornamental female love interest optional.

Guilty on all counts. MacLean's plot isn't bad but that's about all.
I've attempted to watch it 3 times but never made it to the end. I finally made it through thanks to Film 4 last week. Soporific certainly applies to most of it, intercut with jarringly violent bits which add to the high body count but fail to generate any thrills.
