Why do we often refer to single dads being both "mom and dad", but so rarely speak of single mom's being "dad and mom"? Is it because being a single mom is much more common? Is it because male traits are more socially acceptable for women to possess than female traits are for men to possess? What? Or is this even true?

I thought it was the other way around. When ever I hear single parent I think of a mother playing the role of both parents. Because honestly, growing up, that's all I saw.

But as an adult I've had the chance to see both sides of the coin. I have a few close male friends who're single fathers raising children on their own. So I have to remind myself of them when the term is mentioned.

In my humble opinion, this scenario exemplifies the importance of how a family revolves around the mother. Children are genetically predisposed to seek out mom. They are born to seek out moms love. As the old saying goes, "When momma ant happy, ant no one happy". When there is no mother in the family, the man must step up and try his best to provide that gracious love that only mothers possess. My father taught me honor, respect and loyalty, but it was my mothers unconditional love that I often sought most.

It's hard to say, but child rearing has traditionally been a female job. In my opinion the females job has only changed a little. But the single mans job is considerably changed. This of course is a very simplified verizon. It may be due to the traits you mention, but I don't think so.

Probably because a single dad will try his best to feed bath , clothe and nurture a child as a mother would , as well as teach them to hunt, fish, Play ball, box wrench on his bike of do a carpentry project..

While mom will feed, bathe , clothe and nurture I'd suspect she would come up short in the Dad dept.

I think mom and dad or dad and mom has nothing to do with anything. It's basically how our brain associate information. For example, people think of 7 a lot. It doesn't mean that the number 7 has any special meaning to them.
