When did they stop using film to record movies?

A lot of movies are still shot on celluloid but then before any editing takes place all the rushes are digitised and converted to a format so they can be edited and graded through computers then it is either transefered back as one whole complete edited film onto celluloid for theatrical showings or the digital masters are used to create either a digital theatrical release for cinemas equipped with the relevant projectors or turned into a dgital format like DVD
Some recent films have been shot on digital cameras like 28 Days Later and Dogville but they do have a certain look to them which is limited. They rae then released on Celluloid as the majority of cinemas still use the old reel to reel projectors as the quality of digital and the cost has not outweighed the older format yet.

You do surprise me. I must confess I haven't been to a cinema for 4 years (Vanilla Sky was the last time I went). I don't recall seeing a projector last time I went (wasn't really looking though!!)Anyway I assumed it was all DVRAB (or more likely satellite/Broadband distribution) and plasma screens by now.........

There are some small indie cinemas, local arthouse affairs that use a digital projector and dvd's but they are usually films already released,
the piracy issues of theatrical releases is greatly reduced while they still use celluloid if it is digitised then it is too easy to copy.
A dvd when blown up to large cinema size would look as bad as an old phone camera movie on a large widescreen telly

My dad was a cinema projectionist in the 60's and 70's and the last time I visited the projection room(about 1979) the standard multireel format was already being replaced by huge single reels laying down horizontally,thus making is easier for projectionists and also allowing cinemas to use less of them.
AFAIK this is still basically how its done,perhaps even simpler.
But even now,no format,digital or otherwise can capture the clarity of 35mm film.
Satellite and broadband distribution would have to come from a very powerful source,and plasma screens ,even ones that costs tens of thousanRAB are still developing and produce pictures well below acceptable quality.

Digital cinemas will still project the images onto a white screen. You could never get a plasma of acceptable quality to work in a cinema and the cost would be astronomical anyway. Most large cinemas these days have at least one digital projector and soon we'll be looking at distribution via broadband - though most likely it'll involve an overnight download to a large server in the cinema.
The move to making films on digital cameras hasn't moved as fast as was initially thought and George Lucas and Robert Rodriguez still remain pioneers in this respect. This is for a number of reasons - first, the cost of hiring a HD camera is greater than a regular film camera. Then there is the issue that skillset needed for cinematographers, lighting directors etc. on digital films is somewhat different to that of film and talented people with the necessary training are in shorter supply (and therefore more expensive to employ) than film-trained technicians. Finally there are known technical issues with digital cameras such as chromatic abberation which gives film the edge.
