When did manual pyrotechnics become avoided in the cinema/film industry? when did filmmakers start to use CGI?

When did the film industry stop using pyrotechnics such as manual explosions smoke , fires etc. i basically want a general idea of when CGI (computer generated imagery) became popular and the more practiced method for special effects in the film industry
