When did "jail attire" switch from black and white stripes to plain orange?

Or did it at all? You probably know what I mean. In the good old cartoons, whenever the classic guy who broke out of prison (or was in prison in some instances) went around, he was wearing that horizontal black and white striped shirt (the mustache is probably not part of the outfit, but more of a stereotype in my opinion). Now, whenever I think prison, I think those orange suits. When did it change? If ever? Was the black and white shirts just an excuse for lame drawings? If so, why are they more simplistic than orange suits?

This, for some odd reason, has REALLY been bugging me the past few days.
