when can a home repair contractor put a caveat on my home?

I had a renovation company hired for two home repair jobs. The workmanship was totally unacceptable, so after consideration and disgust from friends, i cancelled my cheque. he is now calling me threatening to put a caveat on my home, Is this normal practise. the debt is less than $500
 
Were you unhappy or was it your friends? If you didn't like the work you should not have paid him until you were satisfied. But it appears you were happy with the work so you went ahead and handed over the money. Now your friends planted an idea in your head. Pay the man!
