When camping in areas full of bears & cougars?
is it safer to camp in a big rocky clearing or in a dense forest

is it safer to camp away from lakes and rivers, if so how far is safe

when sleeping at night in a tent, assuming I have no food near me, how likely am I gonna be disturbed by animals. does it make any difference if my tent is green to camouflage

does having a camp fire deter animals or attract animals

Generally animals prefer cover, so go with big rocky clearing. (An alpha predator isnt really going to be deterred by that)

Stay a reasonable distance away from water sources, both because predators seek the normal prey, and use caution for flash floods.

I always hear animals when I camp. Usually, racoons, squirrels, and the other host of nocturnal animals. A camo tent will not make any difference, they smell you (and food). Yes, the campfire is a deterrent, but also can be dangerous if left unattended.

As a side note, no matter how careful we are with food and trash, not a annual deer camp goes by without a bear wandering into camp at night. A bright flashlight and 4 or 5 guys yelling scares them away. A 30-06 and a few 12 ga slugs make a good backup, but im not advocating you do that.
