When buying a wireless network router, does the internet speed I pay for matter?

I know the answer to this question is more than likely yes, I just need some details. I'm signed up for a 12 Mbps connection with my ISP provider and I've been thinking that maybe I need to get a new router since I have the highest grade internet connection I get buy from the provider. I want to make sure that I'm getting all the power I can possibly get with my wireless router. I currently have a D-Link 625 and it works quite well. It says that it offers 54 Mbps and I'm just curious if I should get something a little more high powered since the internet speed I pay for is 12 Mbps.
