when buying a car do i need a license plate?

thinking of just buying and selling vehicles, though not quite sure what the legalities are concerning plates/tags & all that. am i going to be pulled over instantly for not having a plate, or ???

wanting to just buy one, drive it a mile or so & put a big yellow sign on it for resale. any thoughts?
