...increase cost? Don't we all pay that increased cost the company has to charge the public to get back what the lawyer got for his huge fee?
 
The companies also employ managers, engineers, CEO's, CFO's...the lawyers provided a service...they should be paid for it, as for it being a gigantic sum, they are independent of the company there's always a cheaper lawyer somewhere, if the company were inclined to take the chance.
