Wheel hub bearing lifespan?

Hi.

I have a 2004 GMC Sierra 2500 HD (diesel) 4 x 4 with just under 148,000. I am about to have to replace the front left hub bearing a third time. The GM dealer that has done the repairs at about 2 year intervals states this is rather normal ... if so why has the right front hub not needed repair? I have had at least 4 other 4x4 pick ups, and I have never had to replace the hub bearings, and all of my trucks had well over 150,000 miles on them!

My questions:
1) Is the need to replace hub bearings like this (as frequently) common?
2) Could worn hub bearings have caused damage, which is causing subsequent bearings to wearout so fast?
3) Are hub bearings easy to replace, since I am retired and living on pension as a handicapped custodial parent of two toddlers?
4) The replacement parts are supposed to be GM replacement parts. What type of warranty should accompany GM replacement parts? The dealer price to make these repairs is running about $600. On pension and being a handicapped custodial parent to two toddlers does not allow this kind frequent cash outlay!

Thanks for your advice!
