wheel bearings ford focus?

i had my car serviced and it had new rear brake drums fitted, 2 days later i hear a rubbering sound comming from the offside rear wheel, took back to garage and they told me the bearings was all shoot and that the car was to dangerous to drive home, could this be true, would they off noticed this then servicing the car, what could of happened
when the car was serviced, they changed the near side rear bearings, so they must of noticed that the off side rear bearings had gone as well surely
 
They wouldnt have noticed if they were only replacing breaks & yes it is true that if your bearings are shot it is very dangerous to drive home and not only that depending on how bad they are they could be messing up other parts of your car if you keep driving it.
