I like him for showing how seemingly ordinary people can find the spark of divinity inside of themselves. They have usually the better genetics since they are children of various gods, yet the problems they face are intrinsically human.
Moreover, the solutions they come up with at the end are not dependent upon any supernatural strength. It only requires that same effort of will most of us will need to exhibit at one point or another in our own struggles.
My two favorite novels are the American Gods and the Anannci Boys because both works show the evolution of several well known myths and their mutual entanglement which somehow frequently ensnares the protagonist. It is simply fascinating to watch how a myth becomes an unavoidable part of someone's life, the utmost reality they have to deal with. I haven't seen many other writers who explore the archetypes that Jung and Joseph Campbell were discussing so thoroughly in their famous writings. Hope this opinion helps you with the essay.
