What's YOUR CHOICE for a cheap car that is fun, gets great MPG, and is no more

expensive than a Mazda-3? I drive a 1999 Toyota Corolla with 300,000 km, never had any problems with it. My girlfriend drives a 2006 Mazda 3 with 85,000 km and already her front-right strut is leaking. I like the sporty feel of the Mazda and the good MPG of the smaller 2.0 L engine, but my 1.8L Corolla is much more efficient, and that's the one thing that I really need: High MPG !

I want to buy a new car, but I don't want anything any more expensive than a Mazda-3 Sport (hatchback) or a Corolla 'S'. At the same time, I would love to have the fun-to-drive nature of the Mazda-3, but the higher quality of the Toyota. (Yes, I know about the run-away problems of the Toyota's, I once was driving a 1989 Civic when I floored it and the pedal got stuck under the larger floor mats I installed. I instantly grabbed the ignition key and shut off the engine, but left it in "ACCESSORY" position so the steering wheel would not lock. Worked great and that solved that problem easily, so I can do it again if my future car acts up the same way).

What car would you suggest that I get if you were me?

( I prefer Japanese cars and would never buy a North American car, sorry about that.)
( I really do love hatchbacks, they can carry bigger things in them, so I would like to get one if possible.)

- I looked at the Subaru Impreza; not very good MPG
- The Toyota Yaris is way too weird an interior for me, with that center-mounted speedometer.
- The Hyunda Accent = okay, but is the quality all that great?
- There is a new Mazda-2 coming soon, it looks really cool, maybe that would be best?

What do you think, what's your choice?

Too be 100% honest, I lost interest in your question half way through. But you want a fun, efficient, not-american car? I would suggest a VW Rabbit.
