What's wrong with my Philips Television?

I have a three year old Philips 42" TV. I went to turn it on tonight for my kid and could hear audio but on the screen I could only see lines that were flashing on and off in random places. I checked my cable connection and it didn't make a difference it was the same even with the cable unplugged. I then checked all connections and nothing made a difference. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.... To be honest I HATE TV but my husband loves it and I know we'll have to go out and buy a new one if we can't fix it... PLEASE HELP =) Thanks a million
