What's wrong with my Betta Fish?

I haven't had my betta fish for anymore then a year, But These past few weeks, He's been sitting on the gravel of his tank, not as active, and when he would go up for air, He would shoot up(like he's struggling.), Then float back down to the ground....Recently(like in the past few days.), He's been laying on his side, or so his top half is pointing up at the top of the tank...He's still doing the struggling to the top thing, But will just let himself drop back to the gravel...Anyone got any idea what's wrong with him?
