What's the whining noise you sometimes hear from the new Mini at low speeds?

When going at a crawl, like in a car park for example.
I notice it with every Mini I come across, if they're going slowly, that is.

well its most likely the transmission deciding wether or not to go into the next gear, Minis are actually built for speed ( I know i was surprised too) so they tend to whine similarly to how motocross bikes whine. mainly because they are hungry for speed and love high powerbands.

I know exactly what you're talking about, I've heard the same noise on every 'New' Mini I've seen. It sounds the same as one of my old cars and that was the power steering pump that was making the noise. I'm certain this is the same noise that comes from the Mini.

I'll bet they're all the Cooper S models, with a supercharger, which is what makes that noise. I've noticed it too, and every time I hear it, I notice the car has the little bonnet air scoop which marks it out as the supercharged car.

wickerma and haza both get a point for being correct.
Yes indeed it is the power steering pump that makes
that whining noise.
