What's the USA law with harming a burglar?

Just out of interest, in the USA what's the law with harming or killing a person who breaks into your house?

I heard that you can shoot a person who does, but is that just some states and what states are they?
 
In Texas you have the legal right to use deadly force against someone breaking into your house.
