...crime/scary novels? All I remember is that he's been having writes block but when he does manage to write about murders, there's a copycat who actually follows the storyline. As a result, he becomes the primary suspect for all the kills.

I also remember the murderer always calling him (or leaving a message) right before murderer makes his kill so the writer rushes to the scene, only to be too late and caught by the police. He also has a female student in his class that is involved with all of this.
