What's the point of downloading Xbox 360 games onto your harddrive?

My friend said that you still have to use the disc to get the game to start even when you have it downloaded onto the harddrive. So what's the point then. Is it just so that the 360 is quieter and there is less wear and tear on the machine? Does it make less heat? Also, does the performance of the game go down at all, for example does the frames per a second go down. Because, it can't read data from a harddrive as fast as a CD drive can. So, basically, what's the point of downloading 360 games onto you harddrive?
