im a very experienced musician, i play clarinet alto saxophone and piano. but im just very curious about this. i was playing a sax piece a little while i ago, its just one little practice line, and it had a 1 "#" in the key signature, which would mean to play only one sharp, in my case an F. but there were no Fs in the piece, so all the notes were naturual. so what was the point of having the key signature a sharp?

Whoever wrote that piece of music apparently didn't put that note in there; most pieces in the key of G major do have an F#. The key signature indicates what key you are playing in whether there are any actual sharp notes or not.

Even though the seventh degree of the scale was not used in the composition, the work must have revolved around G as the home base. Did the composition start and/or end on G? If so, that was why the F# was in the key signature even though there was no F# in the melody.
