What's the poem that ends, "To know what could have been?"?

Or something like that, it goes something like "The cruelest torture a man can bear, more than that from sword or pen, it is just this: to know what could have been." That may be not even close, and my apologies to the poet, but it's a great line and I'd love the original. If it helps (which I doubt it will), but I first heard this a long time ago in an episode of the Equalizer. p.s. I'm old.
