In Anglo-Saxon times the north of England was the Kingdom of Northumbria, I know that much. At some point after that a chunk of Northumbria became Yorkshire. What I read yeeeeears ago was that the people who lived on the western side of Yorkshire wanted their own county run from Lancaster. There were plenty of battles until those who wanted 'independence' got it and Lancashire was born. The red rose of Lancashire is supposed to be the white rose of Yorkshire dyed red with the blood that was shed to split the two counties. How true is this story and does anyone have any dates and details?
