What's the easiest way to transfer photos from physical to digital?

Okay, so I DO own a flatbed scanner, but I have hundreds of old photos to scan and save as digital photo files in order to work on them. What is the fastest and easiest way to transfer them or is there really nothing else that can be done besides scanning each and every photo (a job I've done before that takes hours). Any ideas to cut down the transfer time?
