What's The Difference Between A Pre-Paid Phone And Contract IF...?

...Prepaids are cheaper. I mean my parents had me under a contract phone for awhile. The bill HAD to be atleast 200 dollars every month, this did not include unlimited calls and texts, just the usual nights and weekends. Now, i just recently got a new phone and for unlimited everything (calls and text and data for internet), its just 45 dollars a month. Its under the verizon network, so service is excellent.

Question, why do people go with contract phones if the phone i have now is extremely cheaper.
