whats the difference between a court appointed attorney and one that is privately hired?

A court appointed attorney is appointed for someone that does not have enough money to hire their own attorney. A privately hired one is out of your own pocket but usually a private attorney is more experienced. Usually the court appointed attorney is new and inexperienced. Usually the private attorneys do better but not always.
 
Court-appointed attorneys have huge caseloads, and a fixed government salary. In short, they are not motivated to work your case - there is no financial incentive for them to win or lose your case. Their primary goal is to spend the least amount of time on your case - which means they will usually pressure you to plea-bargain your case even if you are innocent.

Hired attorneys have a financial interest in a positive outcome for you. Their reputation is at stake.
 
A public defendered is paid through the state..and you get whoever is assigned to you..as where in a private lawyer..you chose and paid for yourself..
