What's the difference between a 4-stroke and 2-stroke bike?

I really want a dirt jumping bike.. I've seen a really nice one which is really good but really expensive.. But it's 4 stroke so people are saying that it's not a good idea buying a 4-stroke and that i'd be better off with a 2-stroke. Please someone; what IS the difference between them?
