It's all about the angle. Take a look at some Myspace pictures and you'll see what I mean.
If you have someone who is a bit overweight or on the chubby side, see if they have any angle pictures and look how they appear to be thinner. You can also use the smudge tool I believe it is in photoshop and make yourself thinner.
