what's the best brand of DSLR cameras, Canon or Nikon? and what model exactly?

so I'm about to buy a DSLR for my Photojournalism class but I dunno what's good. Im actually choosing between Nikon's D90 or D5000. But I heard Canon's are good too. So Im confused. Help!!
